Co-Design Basics

The Patient Centered Value System arms you with tools that engage patients, employees and leaders. Learn how to use these tools to gather powerful feedback and create action.

Lesson Overview:

  1. Where do I start?

  2. What other tools can help?

  3. What do I do with the information I’ve collected?

Q2: What other tools can help?

Your co-design journey will depend on your priorities, current state and organizational strengths. Use shadowing, perception mapping and the ideal story activity to jumpstart and focus your work.

What Matters to You?

Change the narrative from “What’s the matter with you?” to “What Matters to You?” and unlock the power of four words. Create space for patients and staff to feel heard. Understand what they value and how to ensure excellence in patient care and workforce wellbeing.

The Ideal Story.

The Ideal Story challenges your team to close the gaps between your current state and the ideal experience. Use this brainstorming tool to generate ideas and help set priorities.

Learn how one team used the Ideal Story to create person-centered improvement projects while reconnecting to joy and empathy.

Shadowing.

Shadowing is a tool that helps us map the current state of a process or experience. Use this simple approach to gain fresh insight into any care or work environment.

Perception Mapping.

Perception Mapping is a co-design tool used to:

  • Understand our beliefs about a process

  • Identify gaps in an experience so that we can generate ideas, discover pain points and target areas for improvement

  • Engage stakeholders and break down care silos

How to facilitate Perception Mapping:
