Q2: How do you build a balanced team?
Step 1
Select Leadership Champions to support and advise on your improvement efforts.
Consider administrative, clinical and non-clinical leaders who share a passion for change.
Step 2
Determine the touchpoints from which you will recruit Working Group members. Touchpoints (key moments or locations during an experience) can be identified by shadowing.
Your Working Group will stay the same as individual projects begin and end.
Step 3
Identify projects and form Project Teams to begin the work.
Project Teams are a mix of Working Group members and non-members. When a project is completed, that team disbands.
A balanced team sets the stage for successful and sustainable improvement.
Champions support project work at the leadership level and provide guidance along the way.
Find physicians, administrators and directors who share your passion for change and who will help your team overcome operational and administrative barriers.
Recruiting 2 to 3 employees from each touchpoint along the care pathway ensures each area has a voice. Use co-design tools like shadowing to identify your touchpoints.
To reduce the staffing burden, employees from the same care area can rotate meeting attendance.
Experienced employees bring years of knowledge and insight. Newer employees bring fresh perspectives.
Remind employees that their participation in improvement projects can be used to make progress with their own professional and educational goals.
